Pyranocoumarins occur in many medicinal plants and possess diverse bioactivities, such as antiviral, antibacterial, antiprotozoal, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive and antiosteoporotic activities. Pyranocoumarins are found in almost all types of Rhus species with high level of glycosylation. To date, 431 different derivatives have been reported, including glycosides, aglycones, glucosides, lactones and oximes. Natural occurring pyranocoumarins are found in Rhus species and Althaea officinalis from Europe, Alnus glutinosa from North America, Lonicera tatarica and Cornus officinalis from North China and many other plants. The high level of structural diversity in pyranocoumarins signifies their broad medicinal and pharmaceutical potential, and greater than 120 different drugs that contained pyranocoumarins or chemically related derivatives have been developed.
