Sorting your way through Photoshop
The three main functions in Photoshop are the canvas, the Layers palette, and the panels. Every image is made up of layers, or levels. Each layer has a position. The canvas is the foundation of your picture, and when you work on the canvas, you see the working layers in the Layers palette. The panels are where you do most of your work and contain controls for your layers.
The canvas allows you to paint a picture by dragging your mouse. You can draw a line, erase it, fill up the inside of the line with a color, or even paint a polygon, or square, as shown in Figure 5-1. If you have a non-drawing type of program, this function may be useless. Most of us think in images, rather than rectangles.
To help you better work with the layers, Figure 5-1 shows a dialog box that shows you the layers in the document. This dialog box is discussed more fully in Chapter 12.

Working with the Layers palette
If you work on a drawing program or a program that requires you to draw vectors, you may not have this helpful Layers palette. However, if you create a document in the familiar-looking document browser, with the layers in place, you’ll soon appreciate this tool. If you have a design package, such as CorelDRAW, you may not have access to this palette and may therefore need to get the Layers palette by opening a new Photoshop document in Photoshop itself.

What is Photoshop?
